Yashwant Menaria manages the London kitchen of Hinduja brothers. At the age of 14, he took the contract of running the canteen of a multinational company near his village. After working in Mumbai he migrated to London to manage the kitchen of Hinduja brothers.Another Menaria cook Poonamchand Aklingdasot used to cook for Lata Mangeshkar’s family. Later he started to cook for Dhirubhai Ambani’s family in 1997 and worked here for a decade. He used to prepare Millet and wheat rotis, steamed khaman dhoklas, pohe, samosas and kachoris for the Ambani family. He has never done a professional course in cooking. He was a school dropout and learnt the necessary culinary skills from his seniors, peers and recipe books of the late Tarla Dalal, a famous Indian chef.Another cook Vijay Lal Dahot worked for one of the Dubai’s oldest Indian expatriates, Maghanmal Jethanand Pancholia for nearly 15 years. When Dahot retired the businessman decided to give him a unique retirement gift. He spent over Rs 1.42 crore to construct a 100-bed hospital, a secondary school and a community centre in Menar.
A resident of Menar Prabhulal R. Joshi along with Gujarati trader Jitendra Shah started a hospitality company ‘Hina Tours and Travels’ in 1987 to help local cooks find employment in good homes. The company has trained hundreds of cooks from Menar and placed them in well-paying jobs.
