A lighthouse is a tower, building, or another type of structure designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses and to serve as a navigational aid for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways. Lighthouses mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs and safe entries to harbors, and can assist in aerial navigation. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the expense of maintenance and use of electronic navigational systems. In Mangalore, two beaches have a lighthouse which is Kaup and NITK.

Kaup Beach Lighthouse

The main attraction in Kaup beach is the Kaup Light House which was built by British in 1901 on a 27.12m high rock. Built with an intention to guide and warn the sailors about the presence dangerous rocks, Kaup Light House stands tall at a height of 100 ft, today serves as a great lookout point from where one scores a generous view of the coast as well as the expansive Arabian Sea. The lighthouse is open for visitors from 5PM to 6PM and the panoramic view offered is magnificent. The stairs keep getting steeper and steeper as you ascend. At the last spiral, there is a room where there are wooden steps, it’s more like a ladder to be precise where you will have to snug yourself thru and arrive at the balcony of the Lighthouse. The sight from the lighthouse during the rains is also impressionable as one can feel the great intensity of waves crashing on the rocks on the shore.Visitors can spend the day at the beach and head towards the lighthouse in the evening to bring a spectacular end to an exciting day.

NITK Beach LighthouseNITK Lighthouse is a prominent destination in Surathkal. his Lighthouse is present inside the campus of NITK. It is 30 meters high and is painted in red and white bands. NITK Lighthouse, constructed in the year 1972, is a major crowd puller in Surathkal. This lighthouse offers a panoramic view of the scenic beachfront of the Surathkal beach. There is a temple adjacent to the lighthouse which is perched atop the rocks. The presence of rocks makes it dangerous to swim in these waters. NITK Lighthouse attracts visitors of all age groups as it can be easily scaled and perfectly safe. This lighthouse offers a magnificent view coupled with a serene and calm beach that makes it a splendid place to unwind. NITK Lighthouse is open during timings: 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM.
