In London, Bio-Bean, a British start-up and the Shell & Argent Energy together recently introduced buses that ran on coffee-based bio-fuel. The biofuel contains coffee oil, extracted from waste coffee grounds. This biofuel, which makes up 20 percent of the final fuel blend, will then be mixed with traditional diesel. The company collected some of the used coffee grounds from restaurants, cafes, factories and then dried. Then began the process of extraction of coffee oil using a solvent through a biochemical process. The extracted oil was then combined with other fuels which were used in these diesel buses. And this is how the red buses of London were run on coffee based bio-fuel for the first time.Bio-Bean founder Arthur Kay says, “It’s a great example of what can be done when we start to re-imagine waste as an untapped resource”.
